Pair of Chiavarine chairs made of brass during the 1950s. They feature a high backrest with vertical slats and turned finials, a seat upholstered in burgundy velvet, and a frame with stylized lines—characteristic of this iconic model of postwar Italian design.
The Chiavarine chair, also known as the sedia di Chiavari, is one of the great icons of Italian design. Its origins date back to 1807, when cabinetmaker Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi developed a model in the Ligurian town of Chiavari characterized by its slender frame, backrest with fine slats, and refined craftsmanship. It was an instant success, and the design became a benchmark of Italian furniture, remaining in production for more than two centuries and inspiring, in the 20th century, such influential models as Gio Ponti’s famous Superleggera.
