The Trega armchair is one of Tormod Alnæs’s most iconic designs and an excellent example of mid-20th-century Scandinavian furniture. Produced by the Norwegian firm Sørlie Møbler beginning in the 1960s, it embodies the principles of Nordic design: functionality, honesty in the use of materials, and meticulous craftsmanship. Its frame, crafted from solid rosewood, stands out for the elegance of its lines and the visual lightness achieved through a sophisticated system of leather straps that support the separate cushions. The cushions, upholstered in tufted natural leather, provide exceptional comfort and create an attractive contrast between the solidity of the wood and the suppleness of the leather.
Tormod Alnæs (1932–1995) was one of the most prominent Norwegian designers of the postwar period. Trained at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry in Oslo, he built a career centered on furniture design, collaborating with some of Scandinavia’s leading manufacturers, including Sørlie Møbler. During the 1960s and 1970s, he made a decisive contribution to the consolidation of Norwegian design on the international scene.
