Introduced in 1968, the “Semi” ceiling lamp is one of the undisputed icons of Scandinavian design from the second half of the 20th century. Conceived by Danish architects Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup for the prestigious firm Fog & Mørup, this piece synthesizes the formal purity of Nordic design with the technological optimism that defined the aesthetics of the Space Age. The lamp was created after winning first prize in a competition organized by the School of Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where both designers were students. Its immediate inclusion in the Fog & Mørup catalog made it one of the firm’s greatest commercial successes and a benchmark in international design, remaining in production for decades.
Claus Bonderup (1944–2022) and Torsten Thorup (b. 1943) formed one of the most enduring and renowned collaborations in Danish design and architecture of the second half of the 20th century. The two met while studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where they began a professional partnership that would last for several decades. The collaboration between Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup now occupies a prominent place in the history of Scandinavian design, representing a generation of creators who knew how to renew the principles of Nordic modernism and project them toward a contemporary aesthetic with international reach.
