Designed in 1974 by Enzo Mari and Giancarlo Fassina for Artemide, the Aggregato series is one of the most representative projects of Italian design from the 1970s and a brilliant example of the modular concept applied to lighting. Conceived as a flexible and rational system, the collection allowed for the combination of a wide variety of bases, shades, and structural elements, offering multiple configurations suited to both domestic and public spaces.
Enzo Mari was one of the key figures in European design during the second half of the 20th century. An artist, designer, theorist, and educator, his body of work was marked by a deep ethical commitment to design as a social tool. Throughout his career, he collaborated with leading firms such as Artemide, Danese Milano, Driade, Zanotta, Alessi, and Magis, creating numerous objects that are now considered classics of contemporary design. In 2020, the Triennale Milano dedicated a major retrospective exhibition to him, recognizing the extraordinary influence of his thinking and his work on design culture. Giancarlo Fassina began his career at Artemide in the late 1960s, where he was highly active in the field of technical and decorative lighting. His collaboration with Enzo Mari gave rise to the Aggregato series, one of the most successful collections in the company’s historical catalog. He later achieved international recognition for designing, alongside Michele De Lucchi, the iconic Tolomeo lamp (1987), which won the Compasso d’Oro award and became one of Artemide’s greatest commercial successes.
Works by Enzo Mari and Giancarlo Fassina are part of the permanent collections of museums such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Triennale Milano.
