This two-seater sofa, made around 1970, follows the famous Bastiano model, designed by Tobia Scarpa in 1962, one of the most iconic creations of Italian design in the second half of the 20th century. Originally conceived for the Gavina firm, the Bastiano represented a radical reinterpretation of upholstered furniture by combining a solid exposed-wood frame with large, separate cushions, resulting in a piece with clean lines, great comfort, and a distinctly rational construction. The Bastiano model achieved extraordinary international popularity and soon became a benchmark of modern Italian design. Its modular nature, the quality of its proportions, and the warmth provided by the combination of wood and upholstery explain why it remains one of Tobia Scarpa’s most recognizable designs and why it has been reissued in the 21st century, cementing its status as a true classic of contemporary design.
Tobia Scarpa studied at the Venice School of Architecture, where he earned his degree in 1969, although he had already been collaborating with Afra Bianchin since the late 1950s, with whom he built an outstanding joint career in architecture and design. Both worked for firms such as Flos, Cassina, B&B Italia, and Gavina, among others, and carried out major projects in Europe and the United States. Scarpa has received numerous awards, including the ADI Compasso d’Oro, and his works are part of major international collections, such as that of MoMA in New York.
