This piece perfectly reflects Zanini de Zanine’s creative identity. Trained in the technical and conceptual legacy of his father, the renowned architect and designer José Zanine Caldas, the artist has developed a body of work centered on respect for raw materials, constructive integrity, and the mindful use of wood salvaged from demolition sites.
The work stands out for its striking sculptural presence, articulated through solid planes and bold geometries that highlight the material’s natural grain, textures, and imperfections. The transparent glass shell creates a subtle hallmark of lightness and physical massiveness, revealing the underlying structure. The result is a magnificent example of functional sculpture where contemporary design, traditional craftsmanship, and sustainability converge.
Zanini de Zanine (Rio de Janeiro, 1978) graduated with a degree in Industrial Design from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio). He grew up observing the work of his father, José Zanine Caldas, and later completed an internship at the workshop of renowned designer Sergio Rodrigues. In 2002, he began producing his first pieces of furniture using solid wood salvaged from demolition sites. He has received prestigious awards such as the Museu da Casa Brasileira Prize and the Designer of the Year award from Maison&Objet Americas (2015), and his works are part of institutional collections such as those of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the MUDE (Museu do Design e da Moda de Lisboa).
