DESCRIPTION

French or Italian school; last third of the 19th century.
"Cupid".
Carved alabaster.
Slight wear and tear.
Measurements: 61 x 26 x 30 cm.
This sculpture, presents a figure of Cupid, who covers his lips with one hand, while he leans his face upwards towards the ground, adopting a hesitant expression. The work reflects a clear classicist intention, showing an idealised image. Thus showing a broad knowledge of classical sculpture. The fragility of the modelling shows a classical and proportionate canon. The son of Venus, goddess of love, beauty and fertility, and Mars, god of war, Cupid was the Roman god of amorous desire. Other sources say that he was the son of Venus and Vulcan, son of Night and Erebus and son of Jupiter and Venus.
