The relief shows a group of putti pulling a goat by the horns. One of them is whipping it with a stick, while the putti next to him stretches out his left hand towards the hovering stick. One putti hangs over the goat's back with both hands, while another putti plucks another stick from a tree to the left.
This is one of the best known compositions by Du Quesnoy, a 17th century Flemish sculptor who worked in Rome. The playful character of the subject and the subtlety with which the softness of the plump flesh of the putti was sculpted in marble contributed greatly to its fame. Du Quesnoy's style influenced many artists, among them his compatriot Artus Quellinus, who studied with him in Rome.
