DESCRIPTION

Ecce Homo from the early 18th century.
Figure carved in polychrome wood partially gilded, mounted with small garnets.
Wear due to age and use, chipping, xylophagous holes and cracks.
Measurements: 42,5 x 26,5 x 14,5 cm. Rear base 3,5 x 32 x 21,5 cm.
The Christ, of 'half body', waits for the imminent crucifixion on the top of Golgotha, while he is mocked by the Roman soldiers. He is depicted wearing a crown of thorns and stripped of his garments, with his hands in a bound and perfectly crossed position, alluding to his fate on the Cross. Blood drips from the forehead and the drops are mounted with small garnets. Christian tradition considered the blood-red garnet as a symbol of Christ's sacrifice.
The Christ expresses a state of deep sorrow, echoed by the expression of restrained sadness on his face.
The title Ecce Homo - "Behold the man" - is taken from the words Pontius Pilate used to address the crowd when he presented Jesus to them after he had been scourged.
