Relief in alabaster representing Mary in her dedication as Dolorosa, realized with an extraordinary virtuosity with a careful detail in the phatos. Mary is represented bust-length, in an expressive gesture of contained pain that conveys both her sorrow for the death of her Son and the acceptance of the loss and even the hope in the future resurrection. The female figure is cut with precision. This type of figure of the Sorrowful Mary, bust-length and independent of any narrative context such as the Crucifixion or the Lamentation over the dead Christ, were common since the Middle Ages as devotional images. It was common to find this image, moreover, constituting a diptych or pair with the "Veronica" of Christ. The image crossed national borders, reaching New Spain, the former Spanish viceroyalty that coincided approximately with present-day Mexico, or its inhabitants.
