DESCRIPTION

Bust of Mars, late 16th-early 17th century.
White marble.
Measurements: 80 x 57 x 23 cm.

This marble bust most probably represents the god Mars, divinity of war, immortalized in the Roman manner dressed in armor and crowned by a helmet, ready for battle. Although the artist only shows us his bust, the god would carry a spear, sword and shield and would be accompanied by animals such as a horse, wolf, dog or vulture.
In Roman mythology, Mars had many attributes, he was the god of war, male virility, violence, passion, sexuality, bravery. He also held the title of patron of Roman warriors, of horror and victory in wars, of perfection and beauty.
