DESCRIPTION

European School of the 19th century.
"Jupiter and the eagle".
Ivory.
With CITES.
Measurements: 19,5 cm (height).

Figure entirely made in ivory representing Jupiter, god of the sky and thunder, the most important of the Olympian gods. He is considered "father of gods and men", after his definitive victory over the Titans and other primitive forces. He wears a crown that evidences his distinction as god of the sky and carries the scepter and the thunderbolt, his most terrible weapon, guarantor that the laws and destiny are fulfilled. At his feet stands another of his main attributes, the eagle. In Greek and Roman mythology, the eagle served as Jupiter's personal messenger, and is said to have carried the young Ganymede to Olympus, where he served as cupbearer to the gods.
