Saint Anthony of Padua has been represented here as a beardless young man, with Franciscan habit and tonsure characteristic of the order surrounding his head. He holds in his left hand the closed volume of The Scriptures on which is the Child Jesus (in allusion to the legendary vision of the Child that the saint had in his cell).
Anthony of Padua or of Lisbon (Lisbon, ca. 1191 to 1195 - Padua, 1231) was a Franciscan friar, preacher and theologian, revered for his miracles and as a saint and Doctor of the Church, who was first a member of the Order of Canons Regular of St. Augustine, until he became a Franciscan in 1220.
