DESCRIPTION

AUGUSTE DE WEVER (Belgium, 1836-1910).
"Fruit du labeur (Fruit of the effort)", ca. 1900.
Bronze.
Signed and titled.
Measurements: 63 x 30 x 15.5 cm.

"Fruit of labor" reflects the effort and tenacity of a young farmer who, after time of sowing, finally harvests the result.

Auguste de Wever trained with Charles Wiener, where he learned the art of making medallions. In addition to being a medallist, he was also a sculptor. He made numerous sculptures according to the current Parisian fashion and can compete with the best sculptors of his time in terms of technique and execution (e.g. Mathurin Moureau, Pradier, etc.). His best known subjects are allegorical figures, opera characters and "genre" pieces. In addition, he designed and created vases and funerary monuments easily recognizable thanks to finely sculpted bronze bas-reliefs, often applied on granite obelisks. His works were generally cast by the Compagnie des Bronzes and can be found in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels.
