Gothic capital in Verona marble, carved with figures of birds and snakes. Although its original context has been lost, the characteristics of the piece, such as its continuous carving on the four faces, suggest that it may have crowned a free-standing column, possibly in a sacred space such as a crypt. Analysis of its material, iconography and possible function reveals a rich web of cultural and religious meanings, testimony to the artistic and architectural practices of the time in northern Italy.

The decoration of the capital, with birds and a serpent, is deeply rooted in medieval Christian iconography.
