Circle of GIAN LORENZO BERNINI (Naples, 1598 - Rome, 1680).
"Allegories".
Gilded bronze.
They have the base consolidated with lead.
Measurements: 37,5 x 22 x 10 cm; 36 x 20 x 12 cm.
Pair of figures, stylized and dynamic, whose workmanship evokes an expressive and theatrical charge characteristic of Berninian art, despite being pieces of smaller scale and probably designed for a decorative or collector context, rather than for an urban or architectural monumental space.
Both male figures present an elegant contrapposto pose, with naked torsos that exalt the idealized and muscular anatomy, partially wrapped in cloths that seem to be agitated by an invisible breeze. This theatricality of movement, together with the delicacy of the faces and the meticulous treatment of the details, such as the texture of the hair, the beards or the folds of the drapery, refers directly to the Baroque aesthetics promoted by Bernini. One of the figures holds bird sticks in his cloak, suggesting an allegorical or symbolic charge, possibly related to virtues, seasons, or natural elements, and the other holds a fish.
The figures show a stylistic continuity, in comparison with the figures of the Fountain of the Four Rivers in the Piazza Navona in Rome, sharing with them the same passion for movement, facial expressiveness and meticulous attention to the anatomy and texture of the materials.
In short, these "Allegories" are presented as an excellent example of the formal and thematic language of the Roman Baroque, closely linked to the genius of Bernini and his workshop.
