This exquisite alabaster relief represents the Annunciation, a biblical episode in which the archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will conceive Jesus. The scene is set in an interior that evokes the Flemish Gothic tradition, drawing directly from the mastery of artists such as Jan van Eyck (a reference in works such as the Virgin and Angel of the Annunciation from the Ghent Altarpiece, 1432) and Rogier van der Weyden (The Annunciation, c. 1440). The artist's skill is manifested in the creation of the illusion of depth and the detailed contextualization of space. This is achieved with great skill through the inclusion of interior elements such as the canopied bed and desk, which help to define the perspective and mood of the room.
