ANTHONIE PIETER SCHOTEL (Dordrecht, 1890 - Laren, 1958)
"Bust of Christ".
Terracotta.
Signed.
Measurements: 33 x 44 x 38 cm.
This terracotta bust is modeled after the bust of Christ from Michelangelo's "Pietà".
Anthonie Pieter Schotel was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and engraver, famous for his impressionist representations of aquatic landscapes and maritime scenes. A descendant of the renowned sailor-painter Johannes Christiaan Schotel, he inherited a marked passion for the sea and ships.
From an early age he showed a talent for drawing, training with Hermanus Gunneweg in Dordrecht. Although his parents oriented him towards commerce, he opted for painting and in 1915 opened a studio overlooking the Oude Maas. In 1925 he moved to Volendam, attracted by its harbor and fishing life, and then to Laren in 1929, making study trips to the French coast (Concarneau, Douarnenez). These experiences broadened his subject matter and chromatic palette.
He was an active member of artistic associations such as Pictura (Dordrecht), Sint Lucas and Arti et Amicitiae (Amsterdam). His work was frequently exhibited and achieved great recognition during his lifetime. After the Second World War he resumed his activity with vigor, remaining faithful to marine themes until his death in 1958 in Laren.
