Charles Pêtre, whose real name was Charles Pette, was a French sculptor linked to the so-called School of Metz, a prominent artistic focus active in the Lorraine region between 1840 and 1870.
Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he was a disciple of the sculptor Armand Toussaint, under whose influence he developed an academic and sober style, characteristic of the official French art of the mid-nineteenth century. In 1858 he created the sculptures that decorate the balustrade of the Metz theater, and the following year he joined the Société d'archéologie et d'histoire de la Moselle, reflecting his interest in regional heritage.
His consecration came with the Monument to Marshal Ney, inaugurated in Metz in 1860, a work that consolidated his reputation and earned him numerous public and private commissions. After the German annexation of Alsace and Lorraine in 1871, Pêtre left Metz and settled in Bourges, where he taught at the École nationale supérieure d'art, then directed by the painter Costard.
Throughout his career, Charles Pêtre participated in several editions of the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, where he presented sculptures of allegorical inspiration and portraits. His work, characterized by technical precision and compositional balance, represents a significant expression of 19th century French provincial sculptural academicism.
