DESCRIPTION
After AUGUSTE CAIN (1821-1894). France, ca.1900.
Vacuum pocket square with rooster
Gilded bronze.
Signed.
Measurements: 18 × 20,5 × 17 cm.
This gilt-bronze vacíabolsillos is part of the tradition of French animalier sculpture, and is made after Auguste Cain, one of the main representatives of the genre in the nineteenth century, famous for his naturalistic representations of animals endowed with great vitality and character.
The function of pocket-emptyers responds to the taste of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century for luxury utilitarian objects, where sculpture is integrated into everyday life, especially in desks, consoles or hallway furniture.
After Cain's death, his models and style continued to be widely reproduced by French workshops and foundries, both in freestanding sculptures and in decorative and functional objects. These pieces, often signed, enjoyed great acceptance among the urban bourgeoisie for their artistic quality and their strong symbolic charge.
