"Reaper".
Patinated and partially gilded bronze.
Measurements: 18 x 16,5 x 8,5 cm.
This bronze sculpture represents with great sensitivity the figure of a reaper in full pause of his work. The work stands out for its contained realism and its attention to detail, characteristic features of nineteenth-century French sculpture, especially interested in genre scenes and in the dignification of rural work, the precise modeling of the body and the folds of the clothes reveal a remarkable technical mastery. The composition is balanced, bringing visual stability and narrative depth.
In 19th century France, the representation of rural scenes and everyday work acquired great artistic and social relevance, in a context marked by industrialization and profound social changes. Artists and sculptors found in figures such as the reaper a way to vindicate the dignity of manual labor and to preserve the memory of a peasant world that was beginning to transform.
