In Lam, vert sur jaune (2018), Baptiste Laurent presents a portrait that articulates memory, politics and form. Produced at the National Museum of Anthropology with the participation of Senegalese immigrants, the work pays homage to Mame Mbaye and questions the scientific models inherited from colonialism, as part of the Exit exhibition. Its formal ambiguity, between death mask, anthropological bust and ceramics, subverts the objectivity of scientific sculpture and proposes a subjective and empathetic look at contemporary migration.
Baptiste Laurent is a visual artist based in Spain since 2007 and founder of the Latolier studio (Madrid). Self-taught, with a background in political science and art history, he has exhibited in national and international institutions and has worked as a cultural manager. His practice, focused on painting but open to sculpture and projects with literary, social and anthropological dimensions, is characterized by an anti-academic and eclectic approach between neo-figuration and abstraction.
