DESCRIPTION
French school of the late 17th -early 18th century.
"Allegory of hunting".
Relief of gilded copper.
Measurements: 19 x 13 cm; 28 x 22 cm (frame).
This gilded copper plate is characterized by virtuosity in the embossing, close to the technique of "rilievo schiacciato", a Renaissance mode of execution that uses subtle layers of varying depth on a flat surface to create effects of perspective and depth, resembling painting. Developed primarily by Donatello and Lorenzo Ghiberti, this style uses extreme variations of relief, from figures with more volume in the foreground to barely incised backgrounds. The subject, an allegory of hunting, alludes to the late French Baroque period.
