DESCRIPTION

Castilian school of the sixteenth century
Pair of angels mancebos.
Carved wood, polychrome and gilded.
They were part of an altarpiece.
Measurements: 68 cm (height each) + 13 x 16 x 11 cm (modern marble bases).

Pair of wood carvings representing young angels, originally conceived as structural and ornamental elements of a 16th century Castilian Renaissance altarpiece.

The figures appear kneeling on powerful vegetal volutes, integrated in an architectural support of great dynamism. The children's bodies, with fleshy anatomy and rounded modeling, lean forward in a devotional attitude, generating a contained tension that suggests their participation in a larger iconographic program. The heads present an intense interior concentration, with marked eyelids and barely half-open mouths, features that bring psychological vivacity to the whole.

The scrolls, profusely carved with acanthus leaves and floral elements in strong relief, reveal a deep and vigorous carving, characteristic of the Castilian workshops of the 16th century.

Stylistically, the figures are part of the renovating language that transformed Castilian sculpture in the first half of the 16th century, marked by greater compositional dynamism, expressive intensification and assimilation of Italian models.

The inclination of the torso, the structural tension of the postures and the contained expressiveness of the faces refer to the artistic environment that developed in Castile around the great altarpieces of Valladolid of the period, where an early mannerism of great spiritual strength was consolidated.

Due to their scale, quality of carving and sculptural conception, these pieces must have formed part of an altarpiece of certain importance, performing functions of support or architectural transition within the retablistic structure.
