ENRICO MAZZOLANI (Senigallia, 1876-Milano, 1968).
"Figure."

Mazzolani's work is often associated with the Liberty movement (Italian Art Nouveau), but with a more classical formal solidity. The "garçonne" style haircut places the piece aesthetically in the 1920s. The pose is one of elegant coyness; the figure is lightly shielded by the arm, creating a play of curves that emphasizes the hip and torso. The arrangement of weight on one leg while the other remains relaxed is a classic technique that Mazzolani mastered to give the figure a natural, relaxed rhythm.
Mazzolani was a highly respected artist in early 20th century Milan. He participated in important exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale. Although he worked extensively in ceramics (where he is considered a master of detail), his bronzes are highly sought after for the delicacy with which he treated the female nude. His work tends to avoid the heroic drama of other Italian sculptors of the time, preferring a more intimate, everyday and poetic beauty.
