DESCRIPTION
Pair of applique busts. Italy, early seventeenth century.
Bronze.
In good general condition. Surface with beautiful patina. It has a small crack in one of the busts.
Measurements: 10,5 x 9 x 6 cm.
Pair of small busts in bronze conceived as ornamental appliques, representing youthful figures of ascending gesture and lively expression. The loose modeling of the hair and the smooth transition of the volumes refer to the language of the early Italian Baroque.
This type of piece was part of the decoration applied to high quality furniture, especially monumental desks (stipo) or bookcases belonging to the nobility. Their fragmentary character responds to their original function as elements integrated into larger structures.
The surface has a beautiful patina that enhances the nuances of the modeling, underlining its antiquity and decorative value. Currently, this type of sconce is appreciated both for its artistic interest and its versatility in collecting.
