DESCRIPTION
Spanish School. Late 19th century–early 20th century.
"Christ on the Cross."
Carved and polychromed wood.
It shows some loss of polychrome paint, the INRI plaque is missing, and two fingers on one hand have been restored.
Measurements: 42 x 38 cm (Christ); 73 x 40 cm (cross).
Christ is carved from wood and mounted on a wooden cross, whose incised finish lends it a sober ornamental texture. The figure follows Baroque models, evident in its pronounced anatomy, elongated proportions, torso rendered with defined volumes, and raised head, all conveying an attitude of restrained expressiveness. The cloth of purity, with its broad, flowing folds, creates a sculptural hallmark against the verticality of the cross and reinforces the devotional character of the piece.
