DESCRIPTION
Spanish school. Follows Renaissance models, first half of the 20th century.
"Christ on the Cross."
Carved and polychrome wood.
Ebonized wooden cross.
Measurements: 31 x 27 cm (Christ); 73 x 38 cm (cross).
Devotional sculpture of the dying Christ, carved from wood, mounted on an ebonized wooden cross with lobed finials. The figure reflects a traditional interpretation of the suffering Crucified One, with the body slightly slumped, the head tilted to one side, and the arms raised diagonally, emphasizing the physical strain of the martyrdom.
The anatomical rendering is simple yet expressive, with a pale complexion marked by streaks of blood on the hands, side, knees, and feet. The cloth of purity, with its broad folds gathered at the side, introduces a touch of greater movement into an otherwise sober and frontal composition.
