DESCRIPTION
Spanish School. Based on medieval models, 19th century.
Crucified Christ.
Carved, polychrome, and gilded wood.
Measurements: 37 x 37 cm.
Devotional sculpture of Christ on the Cross, carved from wood, polychromed, and gilded. The figure is depicted without a cross, with outstretched arms and the body clad in a long tunic, following the iconography of Christ in Majesty or Christus triumphans, more closely linked to medieval models than to the suffering Crucified Christ of the Baroque tradition.
The frontal perspective, the nearly symmetrical arrangement of the arms, and the rich ornamentation of the tunic all recall Romanesque and Neo-Romanesque models, particularly the crucifixes with drapery that have a long Hispanic and Catalan tradition. The carving combines a certain hieratic rigidity with expressive details in the face, beard, hands, and folds of the robe, rendered through deep grooves and decorative patterns.
The polychromy, dominated by golden and ochre tones, accentuates the piece’s liturgical character and reinforces its interpretation as an image of glory rather than suffering. It shows signs of wear, isolated losses of polychromy, and signs of use consistent with its age.
