DESCRIPTION

Polychrome boxwood.
Measurements: 35 x 24 x 7 cm (Christ); 58 x 38 cm (Cross).
The piece now up for auction is a 19th-century Crucified Christ, characterized by marked naturalism and restrained drama. The figure has a slender, elongated body, with carefully modeled anatomy highlighted by subtle musculature that reveals the physical strain of the crucifixion. The head, tilted toward the right shoulder, displays an expression of profound suffering and contemplation, reinforced by the long hair and parted beard. The wounds and streaks of blood are rendered with restraint, emphasizing the devotional nature of the image without resorting to excessive sensationalism. The short, simply pleated cloth of purity, tied at the side, adds dynamism to the composition, while the rustic-looking wooden cross helps reinforce the naturalism and spiritual intensity of the work as a whole.
