Chinese artist Liang Yuanwei's Somewheresomepage series is a poetic and conceptual reflection on memory, intimacy and everyday experience in a context of profound cultural and social transformation in contemporary China.
The series, composed of photographic prints (C-prints) of various formats, is developed from a process of systematic recording of everyday moments: fragments of spaces, objects and seemingly trivial scenes, captured by the artist over the course of a year. These images, gathered under the title "Somewheresomepage" ("Somewhere, some page"), function as the scattered pages of a visual diary, where each photograph is both document and evocation. The title itself, with its linguistic ambiguity, summarizes the conceptual proposal: "some place" and "some page" allude to both the physical spatiality and the temporality of memory.
Liang Yuanwei has established herself as one of the most prominent figures in the contemporary Chinese art scene. Trained at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), where she received both her bachelor's and master's degrees, her academic and professional career reflects a rigorous commitment to plastic and conceptual research. She currently lives and works in Beijing, the epicenter of Asian contemporary art, where she develops a body of work characterized by technical precision, material sensitivity and a profound reflection on time, repetition and perception.
Considered one of the most relevant emerging artists of her generation, Liang Yuanwei has exhibited her work in numerous prestigious international venues, including the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (Beijing), the Museum of the Central Academy of Fine Arts of China (Beijing), the Minsheng Art Museum (Shanghai), the Berkeley Art Museum (Berkeley, USA) and the Joan Miró Foundation (Barcelona). In 2011, her international recognition was consolidated with her participation as a guest artist in the China Pavilion during the 54th Venice Biennale, one of the most significant events in global contemporary art.
Her solo production has been the subject of multiple monographic exhibitions, including One Object (Hunan Museum, 2019), Behind the Curtain (Palazzo Pisani-Conservatorio di Musica, Venice, 2017), Oval (OCAT Xi'an, 2015), The Tension between a Bow and an Elephant (Pace London, 2014), Pomegranate (Beijing Commune, 2013), Golden Notes (Beijing Commune, 2010), 51m: 15# Liang Yuanwei (Taikang Space, 2010) and BLDG115 RM 1904: Liang Yuanwei's Solo Show (Boers-Li Gallery, 2008).
Critical acclaim for his work has been remarkable. The exhibition Golden Notes was selected by ARTFORUM magazine as one of the most relevant painting exhibitions of 2010, while The Tension between a Bow and an Elephant was included by ArtInfo in the list "Must See: 5 London Shows Opening This Week". Likewise, his work has been included in international reference publications such as Younger than Jesus (Phaidon, 2009) and Vitamin P2 (Phaidon, 2011), which confirms his insertion in the global discourse of contemporary painting.
His most recent collective projects include Everyday Legend (Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai, 2016), Chinese Whispers - Uli Sigg Collection (Kunstmuseum Bern, Bern, 2016), My Generation: Young Chinese Artists (Tampa Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg; Orange County Museum of Art; 2014-2015) and Focus Beijing: The De Heus-Zomer Collection (Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, 2014).
