This studio portrait captures the public image of Víctor Balaguer, depicted in his prime and with the characteristic restraint of nineteenth-century photography. The format and careful lighting focus attention on the expression of the writer, politician, and historian.
A leading figure of the Catalan Renaixença, Balaguer was deeply involved in literary, journalistic, and political activities. In 1884, he founded the Víctor Balaguer Library and Museum in Vilanova i la Geltrú, to which he bequeathed his library, archives, and art collections—which are now essential to the study of 19th-century Catalan culture.
