DESCRIPTION
Russian icon of the 19th century.
"Christ Pantocrator."
Tempera on wood.
Oklad in silver.
Measurements: 31 x 27 x 5 cm.
"Christ Pantocrator" icon, completely painted on the inside and covered with an oklad that leaves the carnations visible. It represents Jesus in half body, frontal and hieratic in his expression. Christ holds the Gospel book in his left hand, and with his right hand, according to the Byzantine Orthodox rite, he blesses with his open palm and the joint of his thumb and ring finger. In this type of icon the ineffable reality of God made Man is expressed.
The tradition of decorating icons with oklad appears after the mandate of the Most Holy Governing Synod of 1722, when it was prohibited to hang metal crosses on icons and leave offerings in the form of coins, since this tradition had pagan roots.
