Three Russian Orthodox saints are depicted on this icon, accompanied by their names in Cyrillic. The robes and cloaks are sumptuously brocaded on the sleeves and trim. The tunics are draped with broken pleats that create a subtle play of light. The golden haloes are silhouetted against a sky blue sky. Colour plays a significant role in the composition, that of a symbolic language that must express the inner luminosity of things, a light that comes from beyond the physical world. In icons, there is no such thing as usual space, just as there are no conventional events. The icon is an open window to a world of another nature, but this window opens only for those who possess a spiritual vision.
