The Biblioteca ilustrada de Gaspar y Roig is a collection of illustrated books with a clearly didactic intention. All the books begin with an engraved illustration to encourage reading, whether it is an allusion to the fine arts, a printing press, a garden with ladies or gentlemen readers. The contents of the collection cover a wide range of subjects, such as reference works, scientific disciplines (Histoire Naturelle by Buffon); history books (Storia Universale by Cesare Cantù, General History of Spain by Juan de Mariana, History of Spain by William H. Prescott, History of the Conquest of Peru, with a Preliminary View of the Civilization of the Incas); biographies (Washington Irving, A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus); a collection of costumbrist engravings (Los españoles pintados por sí mismos); romantic literary works by François-René de Chateaubriand; classic works by Miguel de Cervantes and Victor Hugo; novels by Manuel Fernández y González among others and a bible.
