José Quer y Martínez was the main promoter of the creation of the Botanical Garden of Madrid. In the "Spanish Flora" the author shows a wide botanical knowledge. In it he is an enthusiastic follower of the system of Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708) and very critical with the new system of classification of Carl von Linné (1707-1778), that so good reception was having in all Europe.
