The investigations of Despretz on the latent heat and the elasticity and density of the vapors, the calorific conductivity of the metals, the compression of the liquids and gases, the transformation of the carbon in diamond, on the pile and the voltaic arc, were determinant to establish the bases of the modern physics. He was also responsible for the invention of the first electric furnace and the discovery, in 1822, of mustard gas.
