English edition, published in London in 1917, of the famous medieval chantefable "Aucassin et Nicolette". It is a popular anonymous French medieval chantefable, a combination of prose and verse. The chantefable combines elements of the cantares de gesta, lyric poems and courtly love. Its first known version has been found in a manuscript of the end of the 13th century, believed to have been composed at the beginning of the same century. It is generally taken for a book of chivalry.
