Anne-Hyacinthe de Saint-Léger was a prominent French writer in the transition from the Ancien Régime to the Revolution. From a young age she showed literary talent, supported by her family. She published her first novel in 1781 and achieved success with comedies such as Les Deux Sœurs (1783). The Revolution interrupted her theatrical career, and after suffering financial difficulties, she resumed writing with novels of critical and autobiographical tone, such as Madame de M** (1802). She is considered the first recognized playwright of the theater of the Boulevards. Her work, little studied today, represents a relevant figure in the history of women's literature of the 18th century.
