This novel tells the story of Anna, a young Welsh girl who inherits a fortune and faces the complexities of 18th century London society. The novel explores themes such as social class, love, and the challenges faced by women in a male-dominated society.
Anna Maria Bennett (1746-1808), also known in some sources as Agnes Maria Bennett, was a British English-language novelist, recognized especially for her epistolary novel Agnes de-Courci (1789). Her work is inscribed in the context of the sentimental narrative of the eighteenth century, with an outstanding reception in her time.
On a personal level, she maintained a relationship with Vice-Admiral Thomas Pye, of whom she was housekeeper and partner. As a result of this union at least two illegitimate children were born, among them Harriet Pye Bennett, who would later achieve notoriety as an actress under the name of Harriet Pye Esten, with the direct support of her mother in her artistic training.
After Pye's death in 1785, the year in which her first novel, Anna: Memoirs of a Welch Heiress, was also published with notable success, Bennett inherited her residence in Suffolk Street. She later supported her daughter in the legal dissolution of her marriage to James Esten, assuming the son-in-law's debts as part of the settlement.
Her last work, Vicissitudes Abroad, generated controversy in literary circles at the time. Anna Maria Bennett died in Brighton in 1808, leaving a significant legacy within the female narrative of the eighteenth century.
