Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet was an influential French bishop and theologian, recognized for his brilliant oratory and literary style. Trained in Jesuit institutions and in Paris, he developed an outstanding career as a preacher, especially at the court of Louis XIV. He was tutor to the Dauphin, member of the Académie Française and bishop of Meaux. He defended monarchical absolutism, the divine right of kings and participated in theological debates such as Gallicanism and quietism. Among his most famous works are his funeral orations and Discourse on Universal History (1681).
