Gregorio Leti was an Italian historian and writer who converted to Calvinism after training in Geneva and Lausanne. He lived in various European cities, including Paris and England, and finally settled in Amsterdam, where he earned the title of city historian. Leti wrote numerous historical and political works, including biographies of European kings and rulers (The Life of Sixtus V, Life of Philip II, Life of Emperor Charles V), descriptions of Italian, British and French states and republics, as well as treatises on diplomatic protocol (The Historical and Political Ceremonial). He also published satires such as Roma llorando and Vida de doña Olimpia Maldachini. His production was extensive and spanned multiple volumes, generally written quickly and simultaneously.
