RAFAEL ALBERTI (El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz, 1902 - 1999).
"A la pintura. Poem of color and line (1945-1948)", 1st edition, 1945.
Publisher: Ediciones de la Imprenta López. Buenos Aires.
Handwritten dedication by Alberti "To Max Shwarz these poems of my pictorial nostalgia, with an embrace from Rafael Alberti". Buenos Aires, 1946.
Measurements: 20,5 x 29 cm.
Rafael Alberti is one of the most outstanding figures of the Generation of '27 and one of the most versatile poetic voices of 20th century Spanish literature. A la pintura. Poema del color y la línea (1945-1948) is one of his most singular works, conceived as an extensive poem dedicated to pictorial art and a reflection on the fundamental elements of visual creation. In it, Alberti establishes a direct dialogue between poetry and painting, exploring the expressive possibilities of color, form and line as poetic equivalents of verbal language.
The work is inscribed in the stage of the author's exile after the Spanish Civil War, a period in which his writing acquires a more introspective and universal dimension. From this perspective, the poem is not only a celebration of pictorial art, but also a meditation on memory, loss and the transformation of aesthetic experience through time and distance.
The text brings together a wide variety of artistic references, from the classical tradition to modernity, which reinforces its character as an open work in dialogue with the history of art. This breadth of references makes the book a key piece in the production of the exiled Alberti, where formal experimentation coexists with a deep emotional charge.
From a literary point of view, A la pintura represents one of the most refined expressions of visual poetry in the Spanish language, by converting the word into an instrument capable of evoking pictorial images and chromatic sensations. This fusion of disciplines places the work in a prominent place within 20th century poetry.
As a whole, A la pintura. Poema del color y la línea (1945-1948) is a fundamental work for understanding Alberti's aesthetic evolution and his permanent dialogue with other arts, consolidating itself as one of the most ambitious poetic projects of his career.
