Pair of carved baroque altarpiece finials. Spain, XVII century
Carved and gilded wood.

Measurements: 94 x 47 x 10 cm.
This pair of ornamental elements was part of the crowning or attic of a Spanish baroque altarpiece from the 17th century. Symmetrically designed, the finials have a pointed profile and a rich decoration of vegetal scrolls and acanthus leaves, carved in high relief with a marked curvilinear dynamism, characteristic of the Hispanic baroque.
The composition is organized around a vertical axis, with an ascending development that reinforces the theatrical and vertical effect typical of retablistic architecture. The ample volumes, the coiled motifs and the depth of the carving generate a vibrant play of light and shadow, accentuated by the gilding applied on traditional preparation.
The gilding preserves ancient patina and shows wear and faults in keeping with its age, elements that evidence its original liturgical use and the passage of time. The current fragmentation suggests that both pieces were part of a larger structure, possibly integrated in the upper finish of a street or in the development of a split pediment.
