DESCRIPTION
Renaissance door. Spain, XVI-XVII centuries.
Polychrome wood with mother-of-pearl inlay.
Measurements: 300 x 181 cm.
Door made of carved and polychrome wood, whose symmetrical structure and poly-lobed designs allow its ascription to an advanced Renaissance style. The door has a stretcher frame structure and two large lateral panels, with staggered moldings presenting star-shaped designs in its upper and lower part, which flank a central pavilion with pointed, concave and convex finishes, combined in a symmetrical way in a vertical format. The upper and lower ones present a concentric star-shaped design, and flank a central pavilion of marked verticality. This is a typical Renaissance design, which plays with the illusion of movement and three-dimensionality. The Italian examples suggest complete architectural spaces, built through the application of the laws of perspective, but in Spain we will see more frequent abstract decorations, due to the Islamic influence, although already renewed in their forms, of a classical and non-Eastern character. The design of the door avoids excessive repetition, introducing variety and compositional rhythm, while combining different materials, such as polychrome wood in reddish tones and mother-of-pearl inlays that outline the moldings. The left leaf has a lock, with a metal keyhole.
