Great architectural mirror. Spain, XVIII century
Carved, stuccoed and gilded wood.
Measurements: 240 x 202 cm
The mirror shows visible losses in the polychrome and in areas of the gilding, typical of its age. Nevertheless, it preserves its structural and decorative integrity, being an ideal candidate for a conservative restoration that revalues its visual impact without compromising its original patina.
This mirror corresponds to the decorative tradition of the late Spanish Baroque, possibly linked to noble or religious interiors of palatial character, where this type of pieces fulfilled not only a practical function, but also one of representation of the status and aesthetic taste of the owner.
The water gilding, the use of stucco to enhance volumes and the hand carving reveal the work of a highly specialized workshop. This type of structure often framed imported Venetian or French mirrors, a symbol of luxury and distinction during the 18th century.
This large mirror is made of carved and gilded wood, framed within an architectural structure of strong scenic presence, which makes it an exceptional piece both for its size and its decorative character.
The frame is articulated in three vertical bodies and an upper elevation, organized with a clear symmetrical and ornamental intention. Particularly noteworthy are the lateral appliqués in relief, richly carved with leaf motifs and scrolls, crowned by female anthropomorphic faces modeled with a serene and theatrical expression, evoking allegorical figures or classical masks.
In the upper frieze there is a band of baroque-inspired vegetal scrolls, while in the lower panels there are floral rosettes in high relief, treated with a golden patina that alternates areas of brightness and wear, reinforcing the antique character of the piece.
