DESCRIPTION
Catalan Baroque bookcase with Italian influence, ca. 1750.
Walnut wood.
Measurements: 245 x 104 x 67 cm.
Catalan canterano-bookcase of the XVIII century of Italian influence, made of walnut wood of warm tonality and excellent grain. The piece is structured in three differentiated bodies, at the same time integrated in a local baroque aesthetic. The lower body corresponds to a chest of drawers with wide drawers, metal handles, and a subtle fillet in fruit wood that frames each front, providing geometric order and decorative delicacy. The central body functions as a desk-secreter, with a folding top that protects the set of drawers and niches for organizing documents and personal objects. The upper bookcase is closed by mirrored doors, flanked by decorative pilasters crowned in the capitals by rocaille carvings, a characteristic motif of Catalan rococo. Above this body rises a truncated pediment, formed by scrolls that give visual lightness and dynamism to the profile, and flanked by pinnacles that stylize the piece of furniture. The interior of the upper body also incorporates a register of drawers.
This is a representative example of 18th century Catalan furniture, in which structural solidity and decorative elegance converge, with subtle echoes of the local baroque and rococo styles.
