DESCRIPTION

Empire style console, Spain or France, c. 1900.
Wood, bronze and marble.
Measurements: 75 x 114 x 39 cm.
Empire style console made in Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, a period marked by historicist eclecticism and the rediscovery of the forms and symbols of classical art. Made of wood with gilded bronze applications and topped with a marble cover, the piece combines functionality and symbolism in a formal balance characteristic of the Napoleonic imperial language.
The Empire style, which emerged in France in the early 19th century under the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte, sought to legitimize the power of the new regime through an aesthetic inspired by the Greco-Roman world, reinterpreting its motifs with monumentality and symmetrical rigor. This console takes up precisely those values: its semicircular or "half-moon" design responds to the model of the wall support console, while the frieze is adorned with a meandering fretwork of clear Greek inspiration, which reinforces the linearity and architectural order of the piece.
The most distinctive elements are undoubtedly the four caryatids sculpted in gilded bronze that serve as front legs. These female figures, dressed in classically draped tunics and raising their arms to support the upper structure, directly evoke the anthropomorphic columns of classical architecture and symbolize nobility, virtue and eternity. Their sculptural treatment, with a glossy, polished finish, adds visual drama that contrasts with the sobriety of the wood.
At the bottom, the connecting crosspiece incorporates a carved lion's head, a symbol of strength and power, an attribute also recurrent in imperial furniture.
