DESCRIPTION

Set of 18 drawers corresponding to a German cabinet, ca. 1580.
Wood and marquetry.

These cabinet drawers stand out for their excellent quality and the laborious marquetry work that adorns them, suggesting an origin in the prestigious cabinetmakers' workshops of the German aristocracy around 1580. Chronologically, its style is situated in the transition between the Late Renaissance and the Early Baroque. It is very likely that the cabinetmaker was inspired by the drawings and engravings of Lorenz Stöer (Nuremberg, c. 1537-1621), a prolific artist whose pastoral and wild animal-themed work significantly influenced the craftsmen of the time. On the drawer fronts, this influence is embodied in landscapes and dynamic hunting scenes. The ability to translate Stöer's complex designs into the technique of marquetry testifies to a high artistic value and technical mastery.
