DESCRIPTION
Showcase; Spain, XVII century.
Walnut wood, brass fillets and oil polychrome interior panel.
Buffet of later period.
Presents faults.
Measurements: 107 x 80 x 35 cm (showcase); 83 x 90 x 45 cm (buffet).
Made of walnut wood, it has a prismatic body closed with glass panels on three of its four sides, allowing an almost total visibility of the contents. The structure is carefully ornamented with inlaid brass fillets, which provide a subtle golden contrast on the dark walnut surface, evidencing the technical skill of the cabinetmakers of the time. Inside, the back panel has been polychromed in oil, recreating a landscape.
The showcase rests on a buffet of a later period, whose turned elements and metal assemblies respond to a different stylistic language, although harmoniously integrated. This juxtaposition between structures of different chronologies not only illustrates the reuse and adaptation of furniture in later contexts, but also underscores the historical and evolutionary character of the object, which has survived as a tangible testimony to the tastes, techniques and uses of different generations.
